In fact, 95% of our members are women who encounter gender-based violence, ridicule, and even displacement, often forced to live as nomads due to the stigma their children endure in schools.

Welcome to the Association of Intersex Parenthood (AIP), a registered organization based in Nairobi, Kenya. Established in 2019 and officially registered in 2021, AIP is a community composed of parents, caregivers of intersex children, and intersex individuals. Originally founded as a support group, our organization has evolved to address the unique challenges faced by the intersex community, providing a sense of belonging, moral support, and a platform to share experiences.

Our mission is to cultivate a nurturing community where individuals and families affected by intersex issues can come together, access resources, and collectively advocate for their rights. Our journey began with a shared recognition of the hardships endured, and we have since grown into a powerful, unified voice advocating for equality and dignity.We understand the profound challenges that many of our members face.

What We Do

AIP focuses on advocacy, awareness creation, and capacity building for parents, caregivers, and allies of intersex persons. We aim to recognize and acknowledge intersex persons, raise public awareness, and create economic empowerment opportunities. Our activities include lobbying for inclusive policies, providing oversight on policy implementation, and pushing for the actualization of structures benefiting intersex persons.

Our work goes beyond rhetoric; we actively engage in initiatives that bring about tangible change. Through workshops, campaigns, and policy advocacy, we strive to create an environment where intersex individuals can flourish.

Meet Our leadership

Founder

Meet Peter Maingi, a dedicated advocate for intersex persons’ rights and the visionary founder of the Association of Intersex Parenthood (AIP) Kenya. With a profound commitment to championing intersex rights and social justice, Peter brings years of invaluable experience to the forefront of this important cause.

Peter actively participated in the historic first Taskforce on Intersex Persons, contributing to the development of the inaugural Report on the Policy, Legal, Institutional, and Administrative Reforms Regarding Intersex Persons in Kenya (2018).

His engagement extends to collaborative efforts with the Intersex Persons Implementation and Coordination Committee (IPICC), focusing on the implementation of reforms and addressing critical human rights issues affecting intersex persons.

In a pivotal role, Peter played a key part in drafting and presenting submissions to the Senate on the Registration of Persons Amendment Bill, 2019, aiming to officially recognize intersex persons in Kenya. He persistently lobbies for the enactment of inclusive policies and laws, notably advocating for the Intersex Persons Bill, 2023.

As one of the founding members of the Intersex Persons Society of Kenya (IPSK), Peter draws from a rich lived experience as an intersex parent and guardian for over a decade. His proactive involvement includes sensitizing grassroots communities, engaging with state and non-state actors, and advocating for intersex rights. Recognized as the face of intersex parents and caregivers, Peter has been a prominent voice in media advocacy, featuring on platforms such as KTN, KBC, NTV, CITIZEN, SWITCH TV, RADIO MAISHA, as well as international media outlets like VOA and BBC RADIO.

Beyond his advocacy work, Peter is a skilled facilitator and speaker on the rights and experiences of intersex persons and families, leveraging his background in teaching. Through his initiatives, he aspires to foster a society where intersex individuals, children, parents, caregivers, and families thrive without the burden of stigma and discrimination.
